Andela is an engineering-as-a-service business that helps companies build remote teams quickly and cost-effectively.[1] Andela software engineers participate in a coding boot camp after which they work remotely from Andela’s tech campuses across Africa.[2] Andela’s engineers work from Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Egypt and Ghana, with headquarters in New York.[3]
Andela recruits African technologists, shapes them into technical leaders, and employs them as full-time team members.[4] Andela services companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Cloudflare, Wellio, ViacomCBS, and Women Who Code. It has about 1,200 employees globally.[5]
History
The company was founded in 2014 out of Lagos, Nigeria and New York, USA by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Christina Sass, Nadayar Enegesi, Ian Carnevale, Brice Nkengsa and Jeremy Johnson.[6] Although Aboyeji has left the company after two years of service,[7] Johnson remains the CEO.
Andela built physical spaces in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, which helped with the sourcing and training of engineers to become part of the remote company teams.[8] Andela then decided it was more efficient to become completely virtual after testing out a remote system in Ghana in 2018, and Egypt in 2019.[9]
The company develops young talent in Africa through a fellowship program. Young people are invited to apply for the Andela Fellowship. The applicants are evaluated based on online aptitude tests, in-person interviews and a free Boot Camp, where they are taught the basics of coding and assessed on their ability to become an advanced developer or not. A select few are then chosen to become Andela Fellows and are rigorously trained. Once they acquire 1000 hours of coding experience, they are paired with senior developers who can guarantee their quality of work, and connect them to tech companies that require remote developers.[10]
Investments
During its latest round of funding in 2019, Andela raised $100 million from Generation Investment Management.[11]
Andela is backed up by 42 investors including Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Spark Capital, and Google Ventures.[12]
Awards and Achievements
In 2016, Andela was chosen as the recipient of the 2016 Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE), which recognises American companies that best represent American values in their business practices.[13]
In 2018, Andela was awarded the “Best Company to Work For in Africa” in the ‘’Large Employer Category’’ at the ‘’Great Place to Work Awards’’. Furthermore, it won two more awards at the same event: “The Most Fun and Friendly Workplace” and “Best Workplace for Generation-Millennials”. The event was focused on recognising outstanding African organisations.[14]
The same night, the ‘’HR People Magazine Awards’’ granted Andela “Employer of Choice” and “Best HR Recruitment Strategy”. HR People Magazine holds this event to celebrate HR champions in Africa.[15]
