Cordel Robbin-Coker is the Co-Founder and CEO of Carry1st.[1] Carry1st is a leading social publisher of social games and interactive content in Africa.[2]
He became the Co-Founder and CEO in July 2018 in New York City and Cape Town, where the company is active from.[3] The company was co-founded alongside Lucy Hoffman who is the Co-Founder and Head of Operations[4] and Tinotenda Mundangepfupfu who is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer.[5]
Robbin-Coker is an entrepreneur.[6] He has a background in investment banking and has a passion for mobile games.[7]
History
Robbin-Coker was born in Sierra Leone in West Africa.[8] He grew up in the United States.[9]
He is currently based in Cape Town, South Africa, one of the places where Carry1st operates.[10]
Education
He received his Bachelor of Arts and Political Science degree from Standford University. Additionally, he received the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence as well as the Morgan Stanley Richard B Fisher Scholarship.
Career
He is a Board Member at 4G Capital, a financial services company that seeks to address the finance gap across Africa.[11]
Robbin-Coker is a member of the Brookings Society at the Brookings Institution. The Brookings Institution is a non-profit public policy organisation that is based in Washington D.C and that aims to conduct in-depth research about solving societal problems at a local, national and global level.[12]
He is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD). The NACD is an independent not for profit corporation.
Robbin-Coker is the Founding Community Member of StartX.[13] StartX is a collection of serial entrepreneurs, industry experts, tenured Stanford professors and growth-stage startups. The company aims to find creative ways to collaborate for each company to have a long-term positive impact on the world.[14]
From June 2008 to May 2010, he was an analyst at Financial Institutions Group for Morgan Stanley, an investment banking company, in New York City. He was an analyst at Natural Resources Group for Morgan Stanley from June 2010 to May 2011.
Robbin-Coker was a Board Member for Amrod from November 2016 to May 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa. During his time at Amrod, he led their digital transformation strategy and expansion strategy into high-growth markets in Kenya and Nigeria.[15] Amrod is a trade only supplier.[16]
From July 2011 to June 2013, he was an Associate for the Executive Group/ US Equity Opportunites Fund in Washington D.C, for the Carlyle Group, a private equity company.
He was the Vice President of the Sub-Saharan African Fund from June 2013 to June 2018 in Lagos, Nigeria and Johannesburg for the Carlyle Group. Robbin-Coker commenced his position as Board Member and Treasurer for Milton Hershey School in January 2019 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Milton Hershey School is a K12 Boarding School for underprivileged children.[17]
He has an Advisory Board Member of the Pearl Street Caviar.[18]
Investments
Robbin-Coker is an investor in African startups.[19] He is an active angel investor with nearly 20 investments in Africa-focused technology startups.[20]
Awards and Achievements
He was a speaker at the Super Return Africa event.
Robbin-Coker participated in the WIM 2020 event hosted by EqualOcean where he shared his insights on the topic, “The role of cross-continental collaboration in development of Africa’s tech ecosystem at the African Chapter.” The conference took place online from 9-11 of December 2020.[21]
