EmptyTrips is an online trip exchange platform[1] and a smart transport marketplace[2] that was launched in 2017.[3] It uses Artificial Intelligence, network strategies and shared economy principles to democratise freight-transport, improve profits and “save the planet”.[4] Through the platform, shippers, agents and transport carriers can connect and find transport assets to move their cargo. It essentially acts as an “Uber for cargo”.[5]

EmptyTrips was founded by Benji Coetzee who is now the former CEO of the company. Coetzee is currently the Digital Director of VodafoneZiggo and is a Venture Investor.[6]

The digital platform connects and matches extra capacity on vehicles to those who need goods transported. This optimizes the movement of goods on road and railway transport in a cost-effective way.[7]

History

EmptyTrips matches a person/company with an empty cargo vehicle, at a reasonable fee, to a company that has goods that need to be moved. The platform meets supply and demand for transport across Africa without having to involve customs regulations [8] and provides logistics services.[9]

EmptyTrips is an open marketplace that allows people to find a pool of vetted transporters with various fleet sizes. Consumers can easily find carriers and transact securely with lower transport costs. EmptyTrips allows for free access to the largest fleet in Africa instantly.[10]

Transporters and senders of goods can sign up to emptytrips.com, where the transporters can then bid for cargo needing to be moved and shippers can get competitive open bids.[11]

EmptyTrips are evangelists for rail and its environmental impact. The company focuses on the socio-economic impact of efficient transport by using sustainable and affordable methods[12] that reduces carbon emissions. [13] It does so through optimizing the use of trucks and trains.[14]

EmptyTrips was sold on 20 June, 2019 and that is when Coetzee exited the company.[15]

Investments

Coetzee invested R2 million in savings into EmptyTrips.[16]

Awards and Achievements

On 8 September 2017, EmptyTrips won the Africa Chevas Regal Venture Pitching Den award out of 25 startup companies. This award led them to San Francisco to compete for a US $1 million investment prize.[17] Coetzee was the first South African to represent South Africans at the Startup World Cup.[18]

EmptyTrips has been part of the Singularity U, SeedStars, Slush and Standard Bank Women in Tech Acceleration programmes.[19] It has also been listed as one of Africa’s most promising Start-ups of 2017[20] by Seedstars South Africa.[21]
