LocumBase is an online, independent platform that connects freelance medical professionals with medical practices ensuring quality care when and where needed most.[1] Through the start-up, the locum booking process is simplified.[2]

The start-up is based in Cape Town, South Africa.

The process of booking locums in the medical industry can be time-consuming and result in longer waits for patients and loss of income for locums. LocumBase as an independent, online booking and management platform, matches medical professionals to medical practices in an easy, effective way.[3]

LocumBase was founded in 2016 by founder and CEO, Zulé Vuuren. It is not an agency or a recruiter but an organisational tool that can help build a solid foundation to start a locum’s career or to grow a practitioner’s practice.[4] The company verifies and reviews all locums and practices constantly to ensure a safe environment for all.[5]

After signing up to join LocumBase, medical practitioners can browse through the locum community of quality practitioners and check their availability [6] thus saving time and money for the practitioner.

In 2018, LocumBase took on funding from Montegray Capital and Powerforce Ventures.[7]

In 2020, the start-up received further funding boosts from taking part in the Grindstone Accelerator, a structured entrepreneurship development programme, and joining Founders Factory Africa.[8] Founders Factory Africa, through its Venture Scale programme, helps start-ups rapidly scale via a cash investment of $40, 000 as well as providing access to exclusive partnerships with Standard Bank and Netcare.[9]

In the same year, LocumBase took on additional capital from E-Squared, an organisation that empowers entrepreneurs, and Jozi Angels, an investor network based in Johannesburg, to increase its growth.[10]
